The Shining

In The Shining, Stephen king would have to know what would be common areas that would be considered haunted. I thought that choosing a hotel in the mountains was perfect because the hotel eventually gets cut off from the rest of world for several months. I think that when the hotel is cut off is when strange events start to happen. That’s why people would check out when the winter is coming. I personally have been anywhere like that. But I wouldn’t want to go anywhere like that because I want to live. Also, I wouldn’t want to be cut off from the rest of the world. I think that I would crazy being in the same place with the same people. If the hotel weren’t cut off from the rest of the world I wouldn’t mind going. The view described in the novel sounds beautiful. I would love to take pictures of that view. The story right now is boring. I’m anticipating when the book gets scary. Everyone said the book is good and scary, so I have high hopes for the novel. The best part of the novel so far would be Danny’s dream. He kept seeing redrum throughout his dream. I think it’s foreshadowing something to come. I think that Danny’s friend is a spirit of someone that stayed at the hotel because when Danny saw the hotel he was scared.

Scary?

The Exorcist was scary when it first came out in 1973, but for today’s standards it doesn’t scare today’s generation. For me, however, I never watched the movie or this kind of genre before. So the movie scared me to my core. I believe that the movie has the ability to scare people today, but only the people that don’t like watching horror films. I think it doesn’t scare today's generation because the effects today are of better quality and we have been exposed to so much violence. Also, when the daughter was possessed, it was funny when she would curse. When the movie came out, not many people would curse. Today swearing is part of some people’s daily vocabulary. So when someone is swearing in a movie, it is considered funny The scene that didn’t work would be when the daughter would throw up on the priest. That scene only made me sick and was disgusting.
Parts that still can scare some people would be when the daughter was levitating and the priests are trying to get her back down. Back then, it was something that not many movies were doing. It would make the movie stand out. When the doctor came to her house and it was dark out. His silhouette was dark, but around him it was bright. The lighting gave the scene more drama and it also made the scene more suspenseful. It would be one of the famous scenes from the movie. Another part that worked was when we first saw the daughter possessed. She twisted her head all the way around. That scene would make some people uncomfortable and uneasy in their seat. Also, the scene freaked people out that she twisted her neck like that. The fact she was had blood all over her and that she was using a cross to hurt herself earlier made the scene that much more creepy and scary. When the priests were performing the exorcist and the daughter broke free from the restraints and all you saw was her silhouette and the god from earlier in the movie. How the lighting was done made the scene creepy. It was also tied the god we saw earlier in the movie. The last scene that I thought still worked was when the younger priest attacked the daughter. He told her that he would sacrifice himself to save her. It was interesting how we saw the priest possessed and then he jumped out the window. By killing himself, he is also killing the demon.

The Supernatural

The supernatural is what scares me most. I’m on the fence on whether the supernatural exists or not. I’m not as concerned with the supernatural like some people are. The movie, The Exorcist, is making me believe that it could be possible to be possessed by the devil. Some of the things that the daughter was doing were scaring me. I couldn’t see the scenes where she was physically hurting herself or where there was blood showing. I didn’t have nightmares about the movie, but I’m afraid that if I see the movie I might dream about being possessed. Some people may not find the movie scary, but I did. Movies about the supernatural, horror, and murder are not preference. In the movie, I thought that the daughter was possessed after she was playing with the Ouija board. Personally, I would not want to disturb the dead. I think it is crazy to have something like that in the house. I heard that if you summon a spirit and you can’t put them back, the spirit will remain there. I would never want anything like that in my house. I would destroy anything that has to do with the supernatural or calling on them. If I ever need to get rid of a ghost or spirit, I would get a professional to help me.

Horror: Like or Dislike

Horror was never something I enjoy. As a child, my parents didn’t allow us to watch them until we were older. My siblings are fans of horror, but I’ve always been the one afraid of them. I would always have nightmares and be terrified to go anywhere dark. Growing up, my parents watched them on a cold, rainy night after my siblings and I were asleep. They would have the lights off, a big bowl of popcorn, and watch the screen. It was hard for me to sleep a night. When they were watching horror movies, I would hear the main character screaming. When I was younger, I always thought the screaming was an actual person in my house. I pulled the covers over my head and hide.
I don’t find horror movies that bad now a days. I still can’t watch scenes with too much blood and someone killing their victim. It was surprising to me that I was able to watch The Silence of the Lambs. My parents had that movie since it first came out and I was never able to watch it because I was scared. I was proud of myself that I was able to watch Hannibal Lector‘s escape. If I slowly watch more and more horror movies, I would be able to be able to stand them. Hopefully my goal would be able to watch them and not be scared. It was a good thing we watched Psycho first because for me it eased me into watching horror. Also, it was good watching Psycho first because it introduced modern ideas for horror today.
